Margarete Steiff sits in her wheelchair, contemplating the full, rich life that she has led. In 1908 or thereabouts, this was a typical setting for the company founder. One of the last photos ever taken shows her holding the brand-new Teddy bear Baho, a trusty Dalmatian lying at her feet. In the picture, the angle of Margarete’s hand and the cap the bear is wearing combine to make his ears look pointed – almost like those of a cat. Local artist Otto Neubrand captured the scene in 1947 in an oil painting that can still be seen in the Steiff Museum to this day. In 2019, to mark the 110th anniversary of Margarete Steiff’s death, her companion in this photo is to appear as the Margarete Memorial Teddy bear. An homage to the unconventional, courageous innovator who founded our company, he is made of the finest light mohair and is utterly unique – thanks to his pointed, cat-like ears.
